Well, the 2024 NEWGA season is off to a flying start! The significant growth in membership (currently 175 members v 143 last year) confirms that women’s golf and our fantastic NEWGA golf community are the place to be!
Our first event, the 4-person scramble at Catskill Golf Club last Thursday produced a capacity field of 84 players!! Despite a microburst storm that swept through the course a few days prior to our event, producing severe flooding, downed trees and lots of debris, the grounds staff worked tirelessly to get the course ready for our group and did an outstanding job! Thanks to Jane King, our Catskill NEWGA Rep, for coordinating food and beverage and all the many other aspects that go into ensuring a successful event.
Speaking of success! Scoring was so close from several teams within the 3 flights it required a few match of cards to determine the winners and came down to the slightest of margins! I’d like to congratulate Overall Gross Champions, Betsy Baker, Mary Diefendorf, Linda Kolnick and Deb Langevin (the Canajo/Coble team) who collectively shot an impressive 69. They edged out the Edison team of Kim Skiba, Judy Grastorf, Carrie Hagwell and Kim Southern who also carded 69 (worth an honorable mention I thought :-)). The Overall Net winning team of Liz Santa Barbara, Ellen Kattleman (Western Turnpike) and Rayette Johnson (Ballston Spa) prevailed with a net score of 62.2 despite being a threesome (due to a last minute cancellation) and having to adjust their play to compete as a 4-person team! They edged out the 62.5 net score posted by the Oneonta squad of Roxy Birdsall, Deb Morrison, Kris Shearer and Patricia Canner! Nice playing ladies!
Full results can be found online at newgagolf.com under the Tournament Results section. FYI – This is also where you can check the flighting information for every event a day or two after each event registration period closes.
Registration closed last night for our second event, The Individual Stroke Play (Ringers) at Van Schaick on June 4, and we are very happy/relieved to report that we were able to accommodate all registrants (another maximum capacity field) and avoid going to a lottery!
Lastly, a reminder that The Mixed Tournament at CC of Troy on June 10 is currently open for online registration.
Like I said, the season is off and running at full speed! It was such a joy to see so many familiar faces and meet so many new ones at Catskill, I hope to see many more of you at our future events!
As always, thanks for playing!!
