Wrapping up the first half of our 9-event 2024 NEWGA season here is a recap of our last two events; The 2-person scramble at Fox Run, June 20 and The Purdy at Glens Falls, July 1.
NEWGA Rep Pam Farhart was the proverbial “hostess with the mostest” coordinating our 2-person Scramble event at Fox Run along with her knowledgeable and capable golf staff led by Rich Scott and Holly Nellis in the clubhouse. We were treated to a lovely breakfast (a pleasant surprise) and delicious and abundant salad buffet luncheon. Beautiful course and a fun day! Thank you to all!
It was a very tight race at the top for Overall Low Gross honors, but the team of Debbie Langevin (Cobleskill CC) and Linda Kolnick (Canajoharie G&CC) bested the 70-person field by 2 strokes carding a 72 just ahead of The Edison Club’s Michelle Krasodomski and Judy Gastorf and Canajoharie duo Betsy Baker and Mary Diefendorf’s 74’s! Three other teams posted 75’s. Good healthy competition in all flights! That’s the way we like it!! Overall Low Net honors went to the team of Karen Nellis and Paula Brown (Canajoharie) who went lower than the nearest competitors by 3 strokes with a whopping 54 net! I guess Canajoharie is the place to be these days! Congratulations to all who competed!
Yesterday was a magnificent day at the foothills of the Adirondacks at Glens Fall Country Club for the anxiously awaited Purdy 2 Balls of 4 tournament. Again, close competition as a 1 stroke difference determined the winning Overall Gross 4-person team of Susan Kahler, Roxanne Andrews (Ballston Spa) and Nan Lanahan, Mary Scatena (Pinehaven) shooting 158 eeking out the 159 carded by Sue Delanoy, Kim Lloyd, Samantha Schuffenecker (Shaker Ridge) and Mary Ann Keeler (Western Turnpike). The all-Pinehaven team of Ann Capobianco, Diane Fowler, Jamie Hall and Laurie McBain captured the Overall Low Net title with a 63, -10 showing. Great playing accolades to all 96 ladies, who persevered on a long and challenging golf course! Special thank you to NEWGA Rep Karin Hyman (and also get well wishes!) for helping to coordinate the luncheon details and to the women’s association and golf staff for such a warm welcome yesterday morning!
On deck is The Gail Sykes Memorial Tournament (Better Ball of 2 Partners) scheduled for July 15 at Albany Country Club. Online registration is currently open and closes midnight Friday, July 5 for this 48 team event.
Incidentally, as I often mention the newgagolf.com website has a ton of info for our members. Kathy McLaughlin (NEWGA Web Chair) does a great job keeping it current, so I once again encourage everyone to click around! You’ll find info on what a great lady Gail Purdy Brophy was, as well as Gail Sykes and Peggy Enos who our Senior Championship is named for. There is the latest news and a new section we just added to begin honoring NEWGA members who have passed. It should also be the first stop to check out the field what flight you’re in before playing in any NEWGA tournament (under Tournaments/Tournament Results). We post this information no less than 5 days before each event and post all tournament results quickly following each event. It’s all there and so much more!
Two last notes of mention, 1.) Reminder: it’s NEWGA’s policy to pay 50% of the field or more for every tournament. Tournament Chair Sandy Morley works very hard on the payouts for each event based on the number of individuals/teams in each flight. We love having so many ladies cash!! 2.) We have a private NEWGA Facebook Page, anyone that is not currently a member and wishes to be invited to join can send me a friend request, Debra DiMaggio and I will invite you to the group. Joining the FB Group is strictly optional as this email chain is the primary communications method for all official NEWGA news.
Best wishes for a safe and happy Independence Day celebration to all!
And as always, thanks for playing!
