Gail Purdy Brophy would have been thrilled to witness the enthusiastic turnout and spirited team play at NEWGA’s “The Purdy (Best 2 of 4)” tournament held yesterday in her honor at Wiltwyck Golf Club in Kingston, NY. Hot temps, a beautiful Catskill Mountain backdrop, and what some might refer to as “murderous greens” designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., all combined for a challenging but delightful 18-hole round for our twenty-five 4-person teams!
Overall Gross Champions in this unique scoring format went to the team of Mary Diefendorf, Linda Kolnick (Canajoharie), Deb Langevin (Cobleskill), and our wonderful host and Wiltwyck NEWGA Rep, Cheryl Potter. The foursome bested the field by four strokes with a combined two-ball gross score of 157. The best combined two-ball net score of 135 earned the team of Theresa Marquis (Edison), Christine Brown (Burden Lake), Jennifer Cargioli, and Marina Tompkins (Catskill) top honors for Overall Low Net! Thank you to Cheryl Potter for coordinating a great day and a delicious luncheon buffet, and to Golf Pro Trevor Alexander and the rest of the Wiltwyck staff for showing us a good time. Online registration is currently open through Sunday, Aug. 17, for NEWGA’s next event, the 1 Gross, 1 Net of 4 at Wolfert’s Roost, Wednesday, Aug. 27. Registration also opens Sunday, Aug. 17, for our final 2025 event, the 2-day Senior Championship being contested at Van Patten, Sept. 2-3.
